The Approach
An engagement session should feel stylish without feeling stiff. I am after beautiful portraits, but I care more about the moments in between: the laugh before a kiss, the hand that reaches for your collar, the quiet second when you forget the camera is there.
I give clear, relaxed direction and keep the session unhurried, so you can enjoy the evening together. The goal is photographs that look like you on your best, happiest day.
The Setting
Few places in Northern Virginia give you this much variety within a few walkable blocks.
Red brick and cobblestone give every frame warmth and texture, and they look good in any season.
Black-paned doors, stone window ledges, iron railings and brick townhouses make natural, uncluttered backdrops.
Boats, flat water and low evening light, a short walk from the brick streets.
Quiet lanes and ivy-covered walls let you relax, which is what makes a portrait feel like you.
Old Town is compact, so we can move between very different looks without losing the light.

I am happy to talk through outfits. Texture, movement and colors that sit well together matter more than matching.
I give gentle direction when it helps and step back when it doesn't, so the photographs feel like a moment between the two of you.
You receive a gallery of edited photographs, and I am glad to help you choose favorites for save-the-dates or the wedding.
Questions
Popular settings include the waterfront and marina, the cobblestone stretch of Captain's Row on Prince Street, the brick side streets off King Street, and quiet lanes with ivy-covered walls. Two or three locations is usually plenty.
Wear what you feel good in, and choose outfits that complement each other rather than match. Flowing fabrics, soft linen and structured jackets all work well against brick and stone. Choose shoes you can walk in: the streets are uneven.
Usually the hour or two before sunset, when the light is soft and warm. Check the sunset time for your date and we will plan backward from it.
